Maakotka / Golden eagle /Aquila chrysaetos
A golden eagle diving to attack its prey. This majestic bird of prey once nested throughout the entire territory of Finland, but due to persecution in the early 1900s, it shifted its nesting grounds to the north. Fortunately, in 1962, the golden eagle was protected, and since then, the population has gradually started to grow and spread southward again.

Maakotka syöksymässä saaliin kimppuun. Tämä uljas petolintu on aikoinaan pesinyt koko Suomen alueella, mutta 1900- luvun alun vainon myötä se on siirtynyt pesimään pohjoiseen. Onneksi vuonna 1962 maakotka rauhoitettiin, ja sen jälkeen kanta on alkanut vähitellen kasvaa ja levitä jälleen etelämmäksi.
