Telkkä / Goldeneye / Bucephala clangula
Sometimes the landing doesn't go smoothly for a goldeneye. The goldeneye is a very common duck in Finland. It is highly picturesque, and I am particularly fond of its bewildered expression, which is further accentuated in this landing where balance seems to be failing miserably. The goldeneye can be identified from afar by its triangular-shaped head.

Aina ei mene laskeutuminen nappiin telkälläkään. Telkkä on Suomessa hyvin yleinen sorsalintu. Se on hyvin kuvauksellinen, ja erityisen kiintynyt olen sen hölmistyneeseen ilmeeseen, joka vielä korostuu tässä laskeutumisessa, jossa tasapaino näyttää pettävän pahasti. Telkän voi tunnistaa jo kaukaa sen kolmiomaisen pään muodon perusteella.
Amerikanjääkuikka /Great northern diver/ Gavia immer
I encountered this great northern diver during my trip to Iceland. It was putting on quite a show with running on the water, flapping its wings, and diving. The behavior is very similar to the black-throated divers in Finland. The great northern diver is an extremely rare visitor in Finland, but a few individuals are spotted here annually.
Amerikanjääkuikan esitys
Tapasin tämän amerikanjääkuikan matkallani Islannissa. Meneillään oli melkoinen esitys veden pinnalla juoksemista, siipien räpyttelyä ja sukelluksia. Käyttäytyminen on hyvin samankaltaista kuin suomalaisella kuikalla. Suomessa amerikanjääkuikka on erittäin harvinainen vieras, mutta niitä tavataan täällä vuosittain muutamia yksilöitä.

The annual courtship display of the Great crested grebes is a delightful sight to behold. Mates court each other, bring gifts, and dance together to strengthen their bond. Love is in the air!

In late June, it is possible to see these adorable striped chicks of great crested grebes traveling on their mother's back. Quite soon, they become independent and learn to forage for food on their own, but for a little while longer, they enjoy the safety of their mother's protection.

Kesäkuun loppupuolella on mahdollista nähdä näitä suloisia raitapaitaisia silkkiuikkujen poikasia matkaamassa emonsa selässä. Melko pian ne itsenäistyvät ja opettelevat hankkimaan ravintoa itse, mutta vielä hetken aikaa ne saavat nauttia emon turvasta.
Kaakkuri / Red-Throated diver/ Gavia stellata
When photographing red-throated divers, one can become quite attached to them, especially when closely observing their family life for a few weeks as the chicks learn to fly. Then, one day, noticing they have left the breeding pond, there's a sense of sadness. In this picture, a red-throated diver chick is learning to fly, but its wings aren't quite carrying it yet, and the flying practice ends in a spash landing.

Kaakkureita kuvatessa niihin ehtii aivan kiintymään, kun niiden perhe-elämää seuraa tiiviisti muutamien viikkojen ajan poikasten opetellessa lentämistä. Kun yhtenä päivänä sitten huomaa niiden lähteneen pesimälammelta on haikea olo. Tässä kuvassa kaakkurin poikanen opettelee lentämään, mutta siivet eivät ihan vielä kanna ja lentoharjoitus päätyy mahalaskuun.

The sunbeam hits the red-throated diver just as it descends onto the pond. It's already late summer, and the red-throated divers gather together before embarking on their migration journey. Safe travels, and welcome back next year! The red-throated diver is relatively rare in Finland, and it usually nests hidden from humans in peaceful wilderness ponds.
Kaakkuri auringonnousun aikaan
Auringonsäde osuu kaakkuriin juuri tämän laskeutuessaan lammelle. On jo loppukesä, ja kaakkurit kokoontuvat yhteen ennen lähtöään muuttomatkalle. Hyvää matkaa, ja tervetuloa takaisin seuraavana vuonna! Kaakkuri on Suomessa melko harvalukuinen, ja se pesii yleensä piilossa ihmisiltä rauhallisilla erämaalammilla.
Laulujoutsen/ Whooper swan/ Cygnus cygnus
The whooper swan, our national bird, descends with splashes onto its breeding pond. It's springtime, and the couple has returned to their familiar pond to breed once again. At the spring lek, the partners stand with necks extended facing each other, honking loudly while flapping their wings. Whooper swans fiercely defend their territory if other swans try to approach.
Laulujoutsen
Kansallislintumme laulujoutsen laskeutuu pärskeiden saattelemana pesimälammelleen. On kevät, ja pariskunta on saapunut jälleen tutulle lammelle pesimään. Kevätsoitimella puolisot asettuvat kaulat ojennettuina vastakkain ja toitottavat äänekkäästi siipiään räpytellen. Laulujoutsenet puolustavat reviiriään uhmakkaasti, jos toiset joutsenet pyrkivät lähelle.
Naurulokki / Black-headed gull /Larus ridibundus
The courtship rituals of the black-headed gull male have been successful, and he has found a mate. Nest-building is underway, and the male brings new interior elements to the nest, which the female arranges to her liking. The sunrise beautifully colors the mist rising from the water. Black-headed gulls are quite noisy and lively birds, nesting in large colonies, which provides them safety from predators as they collectively chaseaway egg thieves. Other ducks nesting nearby also benefit from the strong defense of the the black-headedgulls.
Naurulokin lahja puolisolle
Naurulokkikoiraan kosintamenot ovat onnistuneet ja hän on löytänyt puolison. Pesänrakennus on käynnissä ja koiras tuo pesään uusia sisustuselementtejä, jotka rouva asettelee mieleiseen malliin. Auringonnousu värjää vedestä nousevan usvan kauniisti. Naurulokit ovat melko meluisia ja eloisia lintuja ja pesivät suurissa yhdyskunnissa, mikä tuo niille turvaa pedoilta, kun ne yhteisvoimin karkottavat munarosvoja. Myös muut lähellä pesivät sorsat hyötyvät näin naurulokkien vahvasta puolustuksesta.
Telkkä/ Goldeneye/ Bucephala clangula
The courtship behavior of the goldeneye is truly fascinating to observe. The movements, the attitude! You can watch the goldeneyes perform their lekking moves by the lakeshores starting from the end of March. When females are nearby, the males begin bending their heads and kicking the water high.

Telkän soidinkäyttäytyminen on kerrassaan mielenkiintoista seurattavaa. Mitkä liikkeet, mikä asenne! Telkkien esiintymistä voi mennä seuraamaan järvien rannalle maaliskuun lopulta lähtien. Kun naaraita on lähistöllä, alkaa niskojen nakkelu ja veden potkiminen korkealle.
Tukkasotka/ Tufted duck/ Aythya fuligula
This pond's Casanova not only flirted with his own partner but also with everyone else's, leading to small disputes among the males. But if one's self-esteem is intact, why not give it a try? And it's a good thing too because the species is endangered in Finland. Nevertheless, it is among the hunted species. The tufted duck population has decreased by as much as 60 percent since the mid-1990s.
Tukkasotkan lemmenleikit
Tämä lammen lemmensankari liehitteli paitsi omaa puolisoaan, myös kaikkien muiden puolisoja, mikä johti pieniin riitatilanteisiin koiraiden kesken. Mutta jos itsetunto on kunnossa, niin voihan sitä aina yrittää. Ja hyvä niin, koska laji on Suomessa uhanalainen. Siitä huolimatta se on metsästettävien lajien joukossa. Tukkasotkakanta on vähentynyt 1990 -luvun puolivälistä jopa 60 prosenttia.
Metso/ Capercaillie / Tetrao urogallus
The capercaillie's mating ritual is an incredibly special event, where male capercaillies engage in fierce battles during the twilight and early morning hours. It's advisable to behave at least with respect on this bird's leks, as he is the rightful ruler of the area. I myself hid in a photography hide from early evening until morning so that the gentlemen could measure their strengths in their lek battles. Once again, the strongest prevailed and earned the honor to continue the capercaillie lineage.
Metsän valtias -Metso
Tämän herran soidinmailla kannattaa käyttäytyä vähintäänkin kunnioittavasti. Hän nimittäin on alueen oikeutettu valtias. Itse piileskelin kuvausteltassa visusti alkuillasta aina aamupäivään saakka, jotta herrat saivat rauhassa mitellä voimiaan soidintaisteluissaan. Vahvin voitti jälleen ja sai kunnian jatkaa metson sukua.
Metso/ Capercaillie / Tetrao urogallus
The female capercaillie boasts magnificent patterns in her plumage. The female is considerably smaller in size compared to the male. The spring courtship rituals culminate in mating, after which the female lays 6-9 eggs in a nest on the ground. After an incubation period of just under a month, the chicks hatch, and over time, they grow into these majestic kings and queens of the forest.
Koppelo lähikuvassa
Naarasmetson, eli koppelon höyhenpuvussa on upeita kuvioita. Naaras on koirasta huomattavasti pienempi kooltaan. Kevään soitimet päättyvät paritteluun, jonka jälkeen naaras munii 6-9 munaa maassa olevaan pesään. Vajaan kuukauden mittaisen haudonnan kuluttua poikaset kuoriutuvat, ja ajan mittaan niistä kasvaa näitä uljaita metsien kuninkaita ja kuningattaria.
Muuttohaukka/ Peregrine falcon/ Falco peregrinus
From this sharp-eyed migratory hawk, nothing surely goes unnoticed, as it possesses the gaze of a hawk. In Finland, only 270-310 pairs of Peregrine falcons nest, and almost all of them are found north of the Oulu. The species is protected and endangered.

Tältä tarkkakatseiselta muuttohaukalta ei jää varmasti mikään näkemättä, onhan sillä haukan katse. Suomessa pesii vain 270-310 paria muuttohaukkoja, ja lähes kaikki niistä Oulujoen pohjoispuolella. Laji on rauhoitettu, ja vaarantunut.
Töyhtötiainen/ Crested tit/ Lophophanes cristatus
Perhaps the most picturesque of tits is the crested tit, the punk rocker of the bird world. When you encounter an individual posing as beautifully as this one in front of the camera, it brings joy to the photographer. The crested tit, which lives in coniferous forests, inhabits the same area year-round. In Finland, the species has rapidly declined due to intensive forestry practices. Crested tits are found only in Europe.
Töyhtötiaisen poseeraus
Tiaisista ehkäpä kuvauksellisin on töyhtötiainen, lintumaailman punkkari. Vielä kun kameran eteen sattuu näin hienosti poseeraava yksilö, niin se saa kuvaajan iloiseksi. Havumetsissä elävä töyhtötiainen elää samalla alueella kesät talvet. Suomessa laji on vähentynyt nopeasti tehometsätalouden takia. Töyhtötiaisia elää ainoastaan Euroopassa.
Pulmunen / Snow bunting / Plectrophenax nivalis
In Lapland, the snow bunting signals the arrival of spring, much like the skylark in southern Finland. This flock of snow buntings stopped in the field to feed on their journey towards the fell Lapland. Snow buntings come to Finland to breed in the fell highlands. Perching on a branch is pleasant, but there weren't enough spots for everyone.
Pulmusten muutto
Lapissa pulmunen on kevään merkki, vähän niin kuin kiuru Etelä-Suomessa. Tämä pulmusparvi pysähtyi pellolle ruokailemaan muuttomatkallaan kohti Tunturi-Lappia. Oksalla istuskelu on mukavaa, mutta kaikille ei riittänyt paikkoja.
Teeri / Black grouse / Lyrurus tetrix
The black grouse has fluffed up his tail feathers to their finest in his courtship frenzy. And it's better for him if he aims to win a mate this spring. The black grouse is a very common game bird in Finland, and in the spring, you can hear its bubbling calls at sunrise. Although from a distance the black grouse's plumage appears entirely black, in reality, it contains many different shades of blue and green.
Teerikukko juhlapuvussaan
Teerikukko on soidinkiihkossaan pörhistänyt pyrstösulkansa komeimmilleen. Ja parempi onkin, jos hän mielii saada heilan tänä keväänä. Teeri on Suomessa hyvin yleinen kanalintu, ja keväällä sen soidinpulputusta kuuleekin auringonnousun aikaan. Vaikka kaukaa katsottuna teeren puku näyttää aivan mustalta, siinä on todellisuudessa paljon erilaisia sinivihreitä sävyjä.

Koskikara / White-throated dipper / Cinclus cinclus
The most typical sight where you see a dipper is on a rock or at the edge of the ice, bobbing up and down before it dives back into the rapids to search for food. This small bird is extremely cold-resistant; its plumage is very dense, allowing it to thrive in such harsh conditions. The photographer already had frozen toes and fingers while this little one chirped happily between its dives.
Koskikara kivellä
Kaikkein tyypillisin näky, missä näet koskikaran, on kivellä tai jäänreunalla niiailemassa ennen kuin se taas sukeltaa kosken kuohuihin ravintoa hakemaan. Tämä pieni lintu on erittäin kylmänkestävä, sen höyhenpuku on hyvin tiivis, minkä ansiosta se pystyy elämään näin kulmissä olosuhteissa. Kuvajalla oli jo varpaat ja sormet jäässä, kun tämä pikkuinen vain iloisesti viserteli sukellustensa välissä.
Riekko/ Willow grouse / Lagopus lagopus
In its pure white plumage, the willow grouse blends perfectly into its home landscape. It is extremely difficult to spot except when it moves, and even then, only its black eyes, beak, and tail are visible. Can you find the ptarmigan in this photograph? In spring, the willow grouse can be detected based on its croaking mating call, as was the case in this photography situation.
Riekko elinympäristössään
Puhtaanvalkoisessa puvussaan riekko maastoutuu kotimaisemaansa hienosti. Sitä on erittäin vaikea havaita muuten kuin sen liikkuessa, ja silloinkin vain mustien silmien, nokan ja pyrstön osalta. Löydätkö riekon tästä valokuvasta? Keväisin riekon voi havaita sen käkättävän soidinäänen perusteella, kuten tässäkin kuvaustilanteessa tapahtui.
Maakotka / Golden eagle /Aquila chrysaetos
A golden eagle diving to attack its prey. This majestic bird of prey once nested throughout the entire territory of Finland, but due to persecution in the early 1900s, it shifted its nesting grounds to the north. Fortunately, in 1962, the golden eagle was protected, and since then, the population has gradually started to grow and spread southward again.
Maakotka
Maakotka syöksymässä saaliin kimppuun. Tämä uljas petolintu on aikoinaan pesinyt koko Suomen alueella, mutta 1900- luvun alun vainon myötä se on siirtynyt pesimään pohjoiseen. Onneksi vuonna 1962 maakotka rauhoitettiin, ja sen jälkeen kanta on alkanut vähitellen kasvaa ja levitä jälleen etelämmäksi.

Keväisin uikkulinnuilla on paljon mielenkiintoisia soidinliikkeitä. Sulkien pörhistely on yksi näistä liikkeistä.
Kuikka / Black-throated diver /Gavia arctica
The most elegant of birds, a black-throated diver emerging from its dive. Surely, everyone has heard the signature call of this bird; its plaintive melody belongs to Finnish summers. This individual was photographed just as it arrived from its migration journey. I lay camouflaged by the lake shore and had the privilege of observing the divers' fishing up close.

The overall winning photo of the Finnish Photo Awards 2024, as well as the gold medalist in the Wildlife category, features the tail feathers of a Steller's eider as it dives into the water, accompanied by splashes. The background, tinted by the rising sun, creates a soft, warm backdrop for the tail feathers.
